If you are keen to acquire the knowledge and skills required to design, model and effectively operate secure and dependable IP-based networks, the MSc in Networking and Data Communications course is ideal. It will provide you with the opportunity to gain a sound understanding of the internet protocol suite that will form the core for future data networks.

By the end of the MSc in Networking and Data Communications course, you will have developed the technical skills and professional attitudes necessary to progress your career in the rapidly evolving communications industries. You will also have the opportunity to study for industry certification, including CISCO, as an optional extra to the masters programme.

In response to the needs of the industry, this course is now also being offered with a management studies option. This innovative new combined course will enable you to develop key business and management skills and is ideal for students with a background in IT/computing who wish to specialise in the area of networking and data communications while also developing the broad skill set and knowledge needed to fast-track their career in leading and managing successful teams and projects.

The management studies modules are taught by highly experienced staff at the Kingston Business School. Some of the assignments in the management studies pathway are work-based, so that you can apply your skills and knowledge to your own area of work.

What You Study

Using state-of-the-art methods and conforming to current network design standards, you will develop a disciplined engineering approach to, and sound practical skills in, the specification, design, modelling and implementation of software and hardware. You will gain a specialist knowledge in multimedia communications principles, wireless networks, security issues and technologies, and enterprise networks. You will also have access to a dedicated test LAN with a diverse range of platforms and equipment, including wireless networks and enterprise scale networking technologies. In addition, it may be possible for you to gain an industrial placement and undertake a 'real-world' project or work alongside the Faculty's networking and communication research group.

If you elect to take the 'with management studies' route, you will learn the fundamentals of marketing, finance and/or managing people and organisations, which will set your technical knowledge in a management context.
